* "Spammy" means that you'll get targeted for junk mail.

If ProtonMail offered IMAP it would be our #1 recommendation, but that would compromise the extra security it provides. In ProtonMail, all messages are encrypted and unreadable except by the account owner; they must enter their key to unlock and access messages. Also, ProtonMail requires either a browser, or an iOS or Android app, to work.

However, we expect that the vast majority of our customers will want to continue using their preferred email program (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird) with their email. This makes availability of IMAP an important requirement.

As a result, we recommend one of the top two email providers shown in our list: either Gmail, or Outlook.com.
